Alvin J. Sher, 93, of Duluth, MN, passed away on Wednesday, September 7, 2016 in St. Luke's Hospital of Duluth. Alvin was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, parents, Frank and Anne Rose Sher, and siblings Getzel (Lorraine), Jane (John Siegel), and Irving (Betty)
Alvin graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1941, and attended the Duluth Jr. College. Along with his brother, Irving, Alvin founded and was co-owner of Sher Bros & Co, Meats, in Duluth, in 1946, and which eventually merged with his father's and grandfather's company P Sher & Co., Meats. Alvin continued to own and operate the business until illness necessitated closure in 2005.
A longtime member of the Duluth Community, Alvin was a member of the Adas Israel Congregation in Duluth, former President of the Adas Israel Chevra Kadisha, and former member of the Jewish Fellowship Club. Alvin was a man who was driven to dedication to the wellbeing of his family, congregation, and community. During his later years, he spent much of his free time transporting elderly relatives and friends for shopping and errands.
Alvin is survived by his sons Emery, of St. Paul, MN., Phillip (Miriam), of Duluth, grandchildren, Rachel and Callie and many nephews and nieces.
Services to be held at Dougherty Funeral Home at 1:00 pm on Thursday, 9/8/16, followed immediately by internment in the Adas Israel Cemetery in Rice Lake. Shiva will be observed with time and location to be announced.
