Andrew “Andy” LeRoy Mickus, 53-year-old resident of South Range, WI passed away on Sunday, January 26, 2025, in Rochester MN after a courageous battle with cancer.
Andrew “Andy” LeRoy Mickus was born in Onamia, Minnesota on October 14, 1971 to Kathryn and Robert Mickus. He grew up in Onamia, graduating from Onamia High School in 1990. Andy attended NDSU for one year, then transferred to St. John’s University where he graduated with a degree in biology in 1994. After college, he went on to earn a degree in law enforcement from Hibbing Technical College. Andy was sworn in to the Duluth Police force in 1996. He went on to serve the department for the next 26 years, retiring with the rank of lieutenant. His time working for the Duluth Police brought Andy a great deal of pride. He held various positions throughout the police department, some of his favorites being a member of the Tactical Response Team and overseeing the Drug Task Force. On February 14, 2004, Andy married the love of his life, Lisa Munich, in the Dominican Republic, accompanied by a large group of family and friends.
Andy loved everything about the outdoors and was a passionate hunter and fisherman. Duck hunting was his favorite hobby and he spent much of his life chasing ducks in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Canada and even off the coast of Massachusetts. He loved fishing for salmon and lake trout on Lake Superior and Lake Michigan. Andy also loved traveling with his family and friends. He and Lisa took an annual trip each year in February to celebrate their anniversary. Snowmobiling in West Yellowstone, Montana was a trip he loved every winter with his family and friends. He actively participated in the passions of his kids as well by coaching Lily’s youth basketball team, helping with Emma’s horses and assisting Jack in bass fishing tournaments on his high school fishing team. Andy cherished his family and friends and never passed up an opportunity to get together, tell stories and share some laughs.
Andy is survived by his wife Lisa Mickus, his three children, Emma, Lily and Jack, his sister and brother-in-law Sarah and Mark Lehnert of Prior Lake, MN, aunt Carol Panos of Edina, MN, sister-in-law Marcie Munich of Superior, WI, Father and Mother-in-law John and Patsy Munich of South Range, WI, nephew Austin Hunker and nieces Paige and Olivia Hunker and Audrey, Evelyn and Corinne Lehnert. Andy is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Kathryn Mickus.
Memorial Service will be at Clyde Ironworks on Friday, February 21 at 4:00 p.m. with a visitation starting at 3:00 p.m. A reception will follow from 5:00-8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
