Anthony Scott Mitchell, aged 52, died of natural causes in his apartment at Tri-Towers in Duluth on Thursday, November 13. Tony was born in Duluth on November 18, 1961. He attended Congdon Park Grade School, Ordean Junior High School, and graduated from East High School in 1980. He faced mental health issues and chemical dependency for much of his 20's. With time, treatment, and medication he learned to cope with these challenges. Following this difficult period, Tony had 22 wonderful years of recovery, health, and serenity. He lived on the 13th floor of Tri-Towers, with a beautiful view of Lake Superior. He graduated from Lake Superior Community College with an Associate Arts degree, particularly enjoying his art and theater courses at UWS. Tony loved his family and its history. He drove his Grandpa Hamerston to and from Florida many times and always had one more story to tell us about Grandpa's life. He was a wonderful fisherman and never revealed his favorite fishing spots. (They were suspected to be along the St. Louis River.) He loved to chat with everyone he met. He had a happy disposition and positive outlook and always was full of creative ideas on how his family members should spend their time. He lived his life nobly, given his dual diagnosis. He was diagnosed with cancer in early 2013 and moved valiantly through treatment and some mental health issues. Many thanks and much appreciation go to the skillful, caring, and conscientious staffs at St. Luke's Internal Medicine, St. Luke's Oncology, the Human Development Center, and Tri-Towers. It takes a village.
His father, Joel Mitchell, died in 2007. His grandparents were Paul and Constance (Jensen) Hamerston and Josephine (Ennis) and Thomas Mitchell.
He is survived by his mother, Mary Hamerston Olin, and his step-father David Olin; his sister, Kathryn (Alan) Freemond and his two nieces; step-sisters, Susan Olin, Julie Olin-Ammentorp, and Sara Codrea, and his uncles and aunts and cousins.
