Arlo Lavern Danielson, 88, of Duluth, passed away peacefully at Ecumen Lakeshore Assisted Living on May 22, 2018. Arlo was born January 19, 1930 to Andrew and Lillian Danielson on their family farm in Big Stone County, MN. Arlo graduated from Ortonville High School in 1947. Upon graduating from high school, he bought a farm in Big Stone County, which he still owns today. He attended the University of MN in Minneapolis as an ROTC student and graduated with a BS in Mortuary Science. During college, Arlo met his wife, Janice Luchsinger. They married in 1954, had their first child in 1955, and the family moved to Camp Darby - Livorno, Italy, where Arlo served as a Lt. in the US Army from 1956-1958.
The family moved to Duluth in 1958, and Arlo and Jan lived in the Woodland neighborhood for 58 years. A Funeral Director for 45 years, Arlo worked at Johnson Funeral Home, Jarvi Dowd Funeral Home, and retired from Dougherty Funeral Home in 2001. Arlo was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Duluth and former member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Duluth. Arlo was active in many community organizations. He was a Past Master Mason of Ionic Lodge #186, Scottish Rite, AAD Shrine, Past Monarch of the Ela Ala Grotto, Past Shephard of the White Shrine, a member of the AAD Director’s Staff, Past Guardian of Job’s Daughters, Eastern Star Euclid Chapter #56, member of United Northern Sportmen, and life member of both the Elk’s Club #133 and the Owl’s Club in Duluth.
As an avid outdoorsman, Arlo enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, golfing and spending time with family and friends at the cabin on Linwood Lake. He enjoyed reading books, watching westerns and military history movies, playing cards and dominos, doing cross-word puzzles and watching cable TV. Family was first for Arlo, and he instilled the value of hard work and higher education to his children. Arlo and Jan also loved to get together with their many great friends.
Arlo is preceded in death by his parents, his wife’s parents: Jacob Luchsinger, Jessie (Luchsinger) Larson, and Earl Larson, brothers: Jacob, Lornell and Robert, brother-in laws: David Malkerson and Kenneth Zimmerman, sister-in-laws: Arlene Danielson and Jean Danielson, nephew: Kerry Malkerson, and many dear friends.
Arlo is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, children: Dean (Coralee) Danielson, Lynn (Bill) Carlson, Marlo (Bob) Chelberg, grandchildren: CW2 John Francisco, Tara (Nolan) Garrison, Allison (Kevin) Tellinghuisen, Beth Graham, Lynsey Carlson, Jacob Carlson, Mia Chelberg and Sheridan Chelberg, great-grandchildren, Willow Garrison, Brin and Connor Tellinghuisen. He is also survived by sister, Ruth Malkerson, sister-in-laws: Delores Danielson and Jackie Zimmerman and brother-in-laws: Gary (Joni) Luchsinger and Dennis Luchsinger, and many nieces, nephews and life-long friends.
The family wants to thank the staff of Ecumen Lakeshore and Essentia Hospice for their care and support. Thanks also to nephew, Michael, for his care of the farm. A special thank you to Dan Dougherty of Dougherty Funeral Home for his friendship and generosity.
Memorials may be given to Concordia Lutheran Church, The Shores Assisted Living, Essentia Hospice or a charity of your choice.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., with a Masonic service at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 29, at Dougherty Funeral Home in Duluth. Visitation will continue from noon to 1 p.m., followed by the services at 1 p.m., Wednesday, May 30, at Concordia Lutheran Church in Duluth. Entombment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
