Betty Jane (Phillips) Datka, 96, died Thursday, September 19, at Ladysmith Care and Rehab, Ladysmith, WI.
She was born September 18, 1917 in Duluth, to the late Thomas and Agnes (Marshall) Phillips also of Duluth.
Betty was a 1935 graduate of Duluth Central High School. She married Walter John Datka, on January 11, 1939. She worked as a Buyer for the Stationery Department at the Glass Block Department store until her retirement in 1979.
Betty was a member of the First United Methodist Church and belonged to the Rachel Circle. She was a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was an avid gardener and cook and there were always fresh cookies in the tin. Betty was a devoted fan of the MN Vikings and Twins. After her retirement, she volunteered at the Benedictine Health Center and the Rainbow Senior Center. She moved to an Assisted Living Facility in Ladysmith, WI in 2009.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; sisters, Lois Clark, Florence Arneson and Estelle Malmo; brothers, William and Robert Phillips; and son-in-law, James Frederick.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Susan (Leon) Warren of Ladysmith, WI; daughter, Marilyn Frederick of Mahtomedi, MN; grandchildren Andrew Frederick of Minneapolis, MN; Lyndee (Adam) Salo of Lakeville, MN; Craig (Julie) Warren of New Richmond, WI; Scott (Diane) Warren of Hudson, WI; Daryl (Karla) Warren of Green Bay, WI; great-grandchildren; Alexander Salo, Benjamin, Tanner, Cailin, Mitchell, Bridget, Brookelyn and Scott Warren; 2 great-great grandchildren; and special cousins Janet Wieveg and Thomas Malmo.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: 11:30 a.m. Saturday, September 28, at the First United Methodist Church, Three Brothers Chapel, 230 East Skyline Parkway, Duluth, MN. Visitation will be one-half hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, Duluth, MN; Faith United Methodist Church, Ladysmith, WI; Leif Erickson Park & Rose Garden, City of Duluth , or to the charity of donor's choice.
