Betty Leamon Nelson

Betty Nelson of Duluth passed away peacefully in her home of 64 years, on September 19, 2016.

Betty was the daughter of Kenneth and Hazel Leamon and was born in Superior, Wisconsin on June 18, 1921. She graduated from Superior State Teacher College with a degree in English/ Journalism.  On July 9, 1943 she married Edwin Jones who died in an air force flight in May 1946.  Betty taught English and supervised the High School yearbook and newspaper at Superior Central High School until she married Glenn Nelson on December 29, 1951 and relocated to Duluth.  Betty was blessed with two loving husbands and was gift to both of them and her only child Virginia Nelson.

Betty had a very life loving approach to life.  She was kind, and had a beautiful smile and blue eyes.  She loved to sing and knew hundreds of song lyrics. She was an avid reader until she developed macular degeneration in her early 70’s.  Betty simply loved people and people loved her, she will be missed by many, particularly her daughter who feels so blessed to have had her as her mom and best friend for many decades.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; and sister, Virginia Leamon Clark who died in 1955.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Virginia Nelson; niece, Betty Clark; nephew, Kenneth Clark; and several loving great nephews, nieces, and cousins.

A special thank you goes out to, Jackie Hughes, Jaynne Karels, Janice Sailstad, and Beth Magomolla who helped her stay comfortably in her home until the end.  Thanks are also extended to St. Luke’s Hospice for their fine care of Betty.

Service will be 1PM, Wednesday, September 28, 2016 with visitation one half hour prior at First Lutheran Church, 1100 E Superior St, Duluth, MN 55802.

Please consider memorial in lieu of flowers, to the Alzheimer’s Association, and First Lutheran Church of Duluth.
