Charles Edward House, age 80 of Duluth and Palm Springs, died July 1st in Duluth, MN.
Charlie was born on December 25, 1939 in Two Harbors to Joe and Helen (Lena) House. He grew up in Two Harbors and graduated from Two Harbors High School in 1958 and went on to attend the University of Minnesota Duluth graduating in 1962. He became a Certified Public Accountant in 1966 and began his own practice in 1967 and Hansen House Company continues to operate today.
He will be remembered for his gardening and baking, always sharing fruits, produce and home canned goodies, including his raspberry jam. He said that he had his first garden, a corner of his Dad’s Victory Garden in 1945. He won prizes for his Swedish Rye bread and Country White bread.
In mid-life he took riding lessons and enjoyed many years training and showing Quarter and Thoroughbred horses. He traveled the USA and Europe for many years to attend World Equestrian events where he made life long friends in the Equestrian World. He loved travelling and would travel at least a month each year. He traveled almost all of the rivers in Europe on Barges, on many of which he would be the only English-speaking passenger on board.
He shared his professional and leadership talents with many organizations having served as director, trustee and president of many local, state and national organizations. He was proud of his 50 years of perfect attendance in his Rotary Clubs. He was a quiet underground philanthropist.
Upon his retirement in 2005 he became a “snowbird” spending his winters in Palm Springs, California, where he enjoyed daily bike rides, swimming and volunteering, until returning permanently to Duluth in 2019.
He will be lovingly remembered by his bother Robert (Susan ) House , nephew Brian (Melissa) House, niece Melissa (Eric) Lucas; their children Ben Lucas, Carolyn House, Mitchell Lucas, Kathryn House and Margaux House and many special friends in MN and CA.
Celebration of Life will be held on Friday July 10th at Peace United Church of Christ in Duluth at 1PM. Please use the church website to live stream the service (www.peaceucc.org). Private burial will be in the House Family plot in Lake View Cemetery, Two Harbors, MN.
