Chauncey Wales Riggs, Sr., 79, of Duluth, was taken in peace with both of his sons by his side on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at Essentia Health St. Mary's Medical Center Hospice.
Chauncey was born March 7, 1937 to Ada Marion (Cox) and Chauncey W. Riggs in St. Joseph, MO. He was a 1955 graduate of Duluth East High School. Following graduation he served 4 years in the U.S. Air Force. He worked at First National Bank while attending both UMD and UWS, graduating with Master Degrees from both universities.
Chauncey married Elena Marie Sak in 1961.
He worked for the State of Minnesota as a Guidance Counselor. He loved to play bridge and he was an avid tennis player all of his life. He was a member of the YMCA and the United States Tennis Association.
He was preceded in death by his wife Elena in 2002.
Chauncey is survived by his sons: Chauncey W. (Theresa) Riggs, Jr. and Anthony (Judi) Riggs, both of Duluth; six grandchildren: Rachel (Casey), Annah, Rebecah, Cory, Daniel, and Sara; two great-grandchildren: Cade and Tanner; and his sister-in-law Annette (Rick) Johnson of Mahtowa, MN.
Chauncey's family would like to thank Superior View Assisted Living, Karl and the nurses, for helping him through the last years of his life; and thank you to Dr. Monson, nurse Karen, and the staff at Essentia for making his last hours as comfortable as possible.
Visitation: 1PM until the 2PM funeral service Tuesday, March 29th. at Dougherty Funeral Home, followed by military honors accorded by the Duluth Honor Guard. If so desired, memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association, 2002 W. Superior St., Suite10, Duluth, MN. 55806. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery.
