Daniel Herald

Daniel Edward Herald, 77, of Duluth, passed away peacefully to meet our Lord on March 31, 2014 at Solvay Hospice House. He was born May 8, 1936 in Duluth and was the only child of Cora (McKinnon) and Clarence Herald.

He was a lifelong resident of Duluth and was a member of St. Michaels Catholic Church in Lakeside. He graduated from Cathedral High School in 1954 and attended St. John's College and the University of Minnesota Duluth. Dan participated in Golden Gloves Boxing in his early college years. He was also a hockey goalie for Cathedral and St. John's University. After schooling, he worked at the Duluth Herald and News Tribune as a District Rep. Dan then bought a candy and tobacco distributorship in Duluth and worked at it for thirty years. He also loved dogs, so after buying his first dog, a collie named "Lady", he became interested in training. He decided to attend seminars in Chicago to learn the art of dog training. From there he went on to found Arrowhead Dog Training Academy along with his wife Rita (Gajewski) whom he married in 1968. Along with obedience the Academy also began the first puppy classes in the area then went on to teach agility and has been an icon in Duluth for over forty years. Dan's love of dogs led him again to further testing to become an obedience judge. He has judged obedience and rally trials in over forty-five states in the US and in Canada for almost forty years and touched many people's lives. He trained his own dogs which were golden retrievers and recently border collies and attained some of the highest awards in obedience including the first UDX in Duluth and several championships. Dan was instrumental in training many service dogs for Hearing Dogs of Minnesota.

He had a very special and unique personality; if he was giving you "grief", then you knew he liked you! His students were all given special nicknames that became his unique signature.

After selling the candy business, Dan went on to become a travel agent, and worked for Travelogue for several years eventually buying the business.

He was a long-time member of Duluth Lions Club, Elks Club, Ridgeview Country Club, and Owls Club. He was known at the annual Lions Pancake Day as the "sausage guy". He was a lover of all sports and especially enjoyed watching his great grandson Michael play soccer.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Cora.

He is survived by his wife Rita, sons David (Shelly) Herald, Cavan (Diana) Timm, Jeff (Mara) Timm, daughters Diane (Jim) Craig and Donna Andrews, grandchildren Jami (MSgt Mike) Panula, Robin and Will Brown and four great grandchildren Michael Jr, Abigail, Isabella and Ailey.

Visitation will be Friday beginning with a Wake Prayer at 5 and continue until 7pm in the Dougherty Funeral Home. Visitation will continue Saturday at St. Michael's Church, 4901 E Superior St. Duluth from 10am to the 11am Mass of Christian Burial.
