Darlene Margaret Gierzak, 92, of Duluth went home to our Lord on Jan. 15, 2024. She was born the only child to Edith (Freber) and Leon Ebert on June 28, 1931, in Owatonna, MN. She was about a year old when they moved to Duluth, where she spent the rest of her life. Darlene graduated from Cathedral High school. On Feb. 16, 1957, she married Jerry Gierzak in Duluth. She worked for Hormel Meat Packing Co as a secretary from 1951-1965. After leaving Hormel, Dar spent a lot of time traveling to the different Great Lakes ports to meet Jerry due to the long hours away on the ship during the shipping season.
After Jerry’s passing in 2001, she volunteered at Holy Rosary School, working in the library. Darlene was an active member of Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, where she spent many hours lighting candles and praying for others.
Darlene loved time spent with family and friends, playing cards, reading, ball games, casino’s, walking and was even quite a bowler earlier in life. Darlene was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Jerry. Darlene was such a spitfire and will be missed by niece, Julie and husband Clarence, Silver Bay; brother-in-law, Richard Gierzak, Washburn, WI; sisters-in-law, Clarice Gierzak, OSM, Maplewood MN; Meg Puig, Silver Bay, MN; Karen Gierzak, Fort Atkinson, WI, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Thank you to the special “Girls” at Keystone Bluff, (you know who you are!) for winning Darlene’s heart - you always brightened her day!
Funeral Service will be on Friday, January 26, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. with a visitation starting at 1:00 p.m. in Dougherty Funeral Home 600 E Second Street, Duluth, MN 55805.
