It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Delores Mamie Cahoon on November 13, 2024, at the age of 89.
Delores was born in Cromwell, MN on January 16, 1935, to Thomas and Sylvia Nikko. She would proudly share that her birth date was only eight days after Elvis Presley's. She grew up in a large Finnish household of fourteen.
She married Murray Cahoon in Carlton, MN on November 25, 1950. They soon moved their growing family to Duluth, MN, where they raised their six children. Murray passed away on November 13, 1995.
Delores was devoted to her family, church and her work as a cook at Lakeshore Lutheran Home until her retirement. Delores was known for her huge heart, quiet silliness, and generous spirit. This could be seen in the way she fiercely loved her family, devoted her time to helping others and telling the best version of "The Three Billy Goats Gruff" to three lucky generations of children.
She was an active member of her church, Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, and volunteered as a Girl Scout leader for many years. She especially enjoyed being surrounded by kids and would light up whenever children were in her presence.
Delores was preceded in death by her loving husband, Murray; and granddaughter, Tonya Schendel.
She is survived by her brothers, Rudolph and Gordon (Reanetta); children, Lonnie (June) Cahoon, Dianne (Mike) Kaarbo, Karen (Jim) Schendel, Judy (Ronald) Peterson, Barbara (Nate) Goodell, and Carolyn Cahoon; grandchildren, Tara, Dustin (Sunny), Crystal (Christopher), Joseph (Becky), Adam (Rachel), Angela (Ryan), Tracie (Matthew), and Ashley; great-grandchildren, Madison, Aries, Annabelle, Kailani, Zain, Jasper, Maleah, Makayla, Destiny, and Elijah.
The family would like to thank the staff at Viewcrest Health Center and Essentia Hospice for the special care given to Delores.
Delores will forever reside in our hearts as a reminder of what it means to love. We find solace knowing her legacy lives on every time we choose family first and think the best of everyone around us. We are all better for having been touched by her life.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11am on Friday, November 22, 2024 at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 1325 N 45th Ave E, Duluth with a Visitation beginning at 10am. Burial at Forest Hill Cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 218-727-3555.
