Dennis Michael Moyle, age 71, known to all as “Mike”, passed away unexpectedly on February 21 after a protracted and determined battle with kidney disease. He was preceded in death by his parents Major Bennett O. Moyle and Mary Alice Lawler Moyle, siblings Bennett I. Moyle and John Patrick Moyle. He is survived by daughter Claire Moyle of Seattle, son Evan Moyle (Emily) of Eden Prairie and his delightful new granddaughter Ellery, on whom he doted. He is also survived by siblings James J Moyle of Forest Lake, Robert F Moyle of Maple Grove, and Ellen Mary Myers (Gerard) of Duluth, nephews and nieces Michael Myers, Sarah Myers, Susannah Myers, Mary Myers, Matthew Moyle (Ellen), Danna Hamlett, and great-nephews Thurston Hamlett and Elliot and Isaac Moyle.
Mike was born in Columbus, Ohio. He was an Air Force “brat” and grew up all over the world. He graduated in 1965 from Duluth Cathedral High School, and attended St. John’s University at Collegeville before enlisting in the US Army, where he served in the 82nd Airborne Unit and Military Police in Vietnam.
Following his military service, he pursued a long and dedicated career as an officer, sergeant, and detective in the Duluth Police Department.
Mike was a passionate and respected member of the Duluth sailboat racing community for over 4 decades and trained and mentored many new young sailboat racers aboard his 40’ Offshore Racing Sailboat “Arbitrage”. Mike was also a member of the City/County Golf League and was deeply involved in Duluth’s recreational Curling Club where he thoroughly enjoyed the competition and camaraderie of the sport during Duluth’s winter months. Mike was also a volunteer coach for youth soccer. Between soccer, sailing and curling Mike coached and mentored hundreds of kids over the years, many of whom have developed their own lifelong passion.He will be missed by all.
The memorial service will be at the Duluth Curling Club Grill on Saturday March 2nd at 3 pm with visitation starting at 2 pm. Inurnment will be in July at Yorkville Cemetery in the village of Yorkville, WI where he will be laid to rest along side his parents and two brothers.
