Donald W. Miller, passed away Thursday Dec. 3rd at Solvay Hospice House with his family by his side. Don just celebrated his 90th birthday, born July 10th, 1930, in Duluth. He graduated from Duluth Central in 1949. He served in the US Air Force in Duluth, as part of the team that helped start the base. He started his career in the family grocery business as a youngster, going with his father to all the produce houses on Michigan St. ordering daily produce. He loved working alongside his father, brother and nephew Mark at family owned Snow White Foods. Snow White was a beloved fixture in Duluth till 1990, Don loved the customers, knowing all their names and always genuinely caring about the lives they all lived. Proudly giving many neighborhood teenagers their first jobs. Upon closing of the store Don worked a variety of small jobs, the most notable was the grocery delivery service he had with his life time pal Harvey Winthrop (Ideal Market).
Don enjoyed sweets, especially cookies and banana bread; he was a proud supporter of UMD football and hockey; taking short drives during this pandemic; traveling, golf, playing cards, Lake Superior and the TV show Gunsmoke, but most of all Don loved his friends, family and home. Don was blessed to have great neighbors, friends and relatives and thanks to them for all their help and many kindnesses.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, Walter and Daisey Miller; Son Tom Miller; Brother Dick (Barb) Miller.
Don is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary Ellen (Deutsch); daughter Mary Beth (Mike) Smith; Grandchildren Casey Morris, Dan (Sonja) McLean, Michael Smith, Amanda (Zach) Settles, Meredith, Grayson, and Owen Miller; Great Grandchildren Juniper Settles, Thomas and Harris McLean along with many loved nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Wednesday, Dec. 9th from 5-7pm with wake prayers at 6:30pm in the Dougherty Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11am Thursday at the Cathedral of our Lady of the Rosary, 2801 E 4th St., Duluth. Memorials are preferred and may be directed to the Cathedral of our Lady of the Rosary, Kids Closet of Duluth, Union Gospel Mission, or Solvay Hospice House.
