Doris Skull

Doris (Dodie) Lorraine Carlson Skull, formerly from Duluth, MN, died May 1, 2016, at the Benedictine Health Center at Innsbruck in New Brighton, MN, at the age of 91.

Doris was born July 26, 1924, in Duluth, MN to August Elmer and Dora Katherine (Miller) Carlson. Until recent years, her life was spent in Duluth.

Doris grew up in the Nopeming area, graduating from Proctor High School in 1943. She worked as a switchboard operator at Nopeming Sanatorium where she met her future husband, William (Bill) F. Skull. Bill and Doris married in 1944 at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church.

Doris was hostess for many family functions both at homes she and Bill built and at their Sand Lake cabins. She was a skilled cake decorator, seamstress and quilter. Doris traveled extensively in the continental US as well as Alaska, Italy, Jerusalem, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Yugoslavia. Together, she and Bill went on many camping and fishing trips and enjoyed snowmobiling and motorcycle riding. Doris was active in many organizations, including Nopeming community club and sewing circle, Slovenian Women's Union, KSKJ lodge, Women's Aglow, and St. James prayer group. Many have partaken of the wonderful meals Doris organized and prepared, along with fellow parishioners of St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church.

Doris is preceded in death by her parents, husband Bill, daughter Patricia Wood, sisters Shirley Warner and Grace "Tiny" Vittorio, brothers Walt, Elmer "Curly", and Marshall "Mike" Carlson, and infant granddaughters Sarah and Harmony.

She is survived by children Maxine (John) Trolander, Lizette Miller and William J. Skull and his friend, Sue Munson. She leaves behind five grandchildren, Rebecca, Abigail, Autumn, Brian and John and six great grandchildren and her brother Curtis "Buddy" Carlson.

Visitation will be held on Friday, May 6, 2016 from 10am until the 11am Mass of Christian Burial in St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church, 610 - 99th Avenue West, with a 9:30am rosary recitation by the Slovenian Women's Union. Burial will be in Oneota Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a donation to a Food Shelf or a charity of your choice is preferred.
