Dorothy Beatrice (Schmittdiel) Gearns, 97, died Sunday, March 26, 2017 in Benedictine Health Center.
Born in Duluth in 1919 to John W. and Delphine A. (LeMay) Schmittdiel, she was a lifelong Duluth resident.
Dorothy graduated from Central High School and was active in the class of 1937 reunion committees. During World War II she worked for Marshall Wells Hardware. March 2, 1946, she married Maurice H. "Harry" Gearns in Sacred Heart Cathedral. Both Dorothy and Harry enjoyed golf, playing courses in Florida and Arizona during the winter months and she was also a member of several Bridge clubs. Dorothy was a parishioner at the former St. Anthony's Church and a member of its Home and School Association, and, most recently, a parishioner at St. Benedict's Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her siblings; husband, Harry; and son, Daniel.
Survivors include a son, Jim; grandsons, Tim and Kevin (Katie) Gearns and their mother Jane Hayes; as well as several nieces and nephews.
VISITATION: 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial Thursday, March 30, in St. Benedict's Catholic Church. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. If so desired, memorials may be made to St. Benedict's Church, 1419 St. Benedict Street, Duluth. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home. (218) 727-3555.
