Dorothy Piering Lanctot, 91, of Duluth died Jan 13, 2019. She was born March 15, 1927 in Duluth and lived a life filled with music, family, friends and church. She liked to brag that she sang on the radio when she was 3 years old. She took dance lessons and learned to play the piano at a very young age. As a teenager she rode the bus from West Duluth every week to St Anthony’s Catholic Church to play the organ for Sunday Mass. She graduated from Cathedral High School in 1945 and went to work as a secretary in downtown Duluth. She married Bill Lanctot on August 7th, 1948 and raised their family together. The house was always filled with music. For a while there were 2 pianos and an organ in their home where they entertained family, friends, and neighbors with good food, drinks and Mom at the piano and everybody sang. She was a longtime member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church where she was a member of the choir and volunteered in parish activities. She spent many years at Holy Rosary School working with the PTA and played the piano for school choir concerts. She loved the times she performed with The Marybelles, a group of women volunteers who danced and sang for St Mary’s hospital events and fundraisers.
Dorothy liked all games, puzzles, arts and crafts and crossword puzzles. Many will remember her for long and silly poems that she would write and recite at family events. She was a member of the Duluth Women’s Club where she played bridge often. She and Bill were members of Northland Country Club and she learned to play golf enjoying the Womens 9 hole group. Dorothy and Bill had retirement homes in Solana Beach CA and finally in Sun City West, AZ where they spent 14 great years. They moved back to Duluth in 2000. She was preceded in death by her husband Bill in 2002 after 54 years of marriage and by her sister Patricia Peterson in 2004.
She is survived by her children, Bill [Ginny] Lanctot of Brooklyn Park MN, Debbie [Michael] Bolen of Duluth, Michelle [Mike] Kumpula of Calumet, Michigan and Renee [Rich] Flores of San Diego CA., grandchildren Nick [Regan]Lanctot, Charlie and Suzie Lanctot, Sam and Libby Bolen, and great- granddaughters Dorothy Mae and Maeve Lanctot.
