Douglas George Reckinger, age 93 of Duluth died peacefully surrounded by his family on May 20, 2024. He was born in St. Paul, MN to parents Nicholas & Helen (Irene) Reckinger on April 17, 1931. Doug enlisted in the United States Navy before transferring to the Air Force. The military brought him to Duluth, MN where he worked at the Fire Department on the Airbase. While there, Doug and his brother Richard received a Life Saving Certificate from the Red Cross for saving a mans life after an accident responding to a house fire in Hermantown. On June 16, 1956 he married the love of his life, Carol Ferrazzi. Together they raised 3 wonderful children. Doug worked and retired as a Police Officer for the City of Duluth, where he received commendations for service above and beyond while on patrol. Doug loved to buy and sell cars, it is believed he had bought and sold over 100 during his life. Doug had a passion for riding motorcycles, he always said it was the best way to remove stress from the job. In retirement he spent time with his family, was a custodian at St. Joseph Catholic Church, traveled, and took care of his beautiful wife during her illness. Doug is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Carol; and brother, Bryant. He is survived by his children, Michael (Brenda), Richard (Ann), and Carrie Johnson (Frank Haydon Jr.); grandchildren, Nicole, Jessica (Colin), Morgan, Kelsey, Carley, Natasha, Derek, and Melanie; 11 great-grandchildren; siblings, Richard (Jeanine), and Elaine Bottomley. His companion of many years, Sandy Hite; and many extended family and friends.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am with a visitation starting at 10:00 am on Saturday, June 1st in Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E Second Street. Interment at Forest Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
