Edward Balcer

Edward R. Balcer, 96, of Duluth, passed away on Saturday, November 15, 2014, in St. Luke's Hospice. He was born on October 5, 1918, to Jacob and Helen Balcer in Tenstrike, MN. Ed graduated from high school in Bemidji, MN. He was a US Army veteran of WWII serving five years with the 431st AAA where he received numerous service medals and commendations. He was a mechanic and later a truck driver with Teamsters Local 346. Ed was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, and life-long member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, archery, gardening, bowling, and playing horseshoes and many other games. He was a caring and loving man with a wonderful sense of humor.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters, and one brother.
Ed is survived by his wife of 63 years, Delores, children Edward, Mary, Greg (Heather Odell) Balcer, Marge (Erich) Schroeder, and grandchildren Tiah and Natasha Balcer and Karl Schroeder.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 18, 2014, from 10 AM until the 11 AM "Mass of Christian Burial" at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 4901 E. Superior St., Duluth, MN 55804. Burial will be in Oneota Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Duluth Honor Guard. Arrangements are by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. 2nd St., Duluth, MN 55805, (218) 727-3555.
