Emery "Bud" Eugene Ulrich, 86, died peacefully January 14, 2014 at home in Canyon, Minn.
Bud was born October 22, 1927 in Carey, Ohio to Emery and Nelleta Ulrich.
After serving in the US Naval Hospital Corps he attended Bowling Green University, and Ohio State Medical School. He remained a Buckeye fan his entire life.
Bud practiced as a Family doctor in his hometown and in Crosby. In 1962 he entered a Psychiatric Residency program in Oklahoma City, afterwards accepting a position at The Duluth Clinic. Dr. Ulrich served as
Chief of Neuropsychiatry at St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth, from 1973-1974. After retirement Bud continued to work in Moose Lake State Hospital and the Iron Range Mental Health Clinic. The Minnesota Psyhiatric Society awarded him the Distinquished Service Award in 2011 to honor his commitment to, and developement of mental health services on the Iron Range.
Health issues led to his final retirement in 2012.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and grandchildren Gennifer and Scott.
Survivors include his wife Kristine Nielsen of Canyon; six children: Kristine (Jim) Gray of Pelican Rapids, MN, Karl (Judy) of Dillon, MT, Kamla (Steve) Takesian of Anthem, AZ, Kurtis (Cindi) of Champlin, MN, Kathryn Ulrich of Eau Claire, WI, and Kerri (Steve) Pettes of Las Cruces, NM; step-son Hans Buelke of Canyon; 13 grandchildren: Rebecca Gray, Benjamin Gray, Jessica Schad, Natalie Ulrich, Kathryn June Ulrich, Sean Takesian, Sarah Takesian, Angela Ulrich, Megan Ulrich, Cora Haselow, Elyse Haselow, Donnie Pettes and Sophia Pettes three great-grandchildren; and Annette Ulrich, former wife and mother of his children, Duluth.
Bud was an artist, author, philosopher, athlete, and musician who loved life to the fullest. One of his favorite pastimes in the last few years was recording his childhood memoirs.
A gathering of family and friends will be on Friday, January 17, 2014 from 5-7pm at Dougherty Funeral Home. Private family services will be held on Saturday. To express condolences and read more life stories visit www.doughertyfuneralduluth.com.
