Frederick "Fred" Vokovan

Frederick “Fred” D. Vokovan, 93, passed away peacefully at home February 6, 2025. He was born in Duluth on May 29, 1931, and lived most of his life in the Duluth area. He was educated at Duluth Central High School, and other job specific training throughout his career. Fred worked for National Biscuit for 20 years and later for the State of MN Department of Public Service, Weights and Measure Division as a Senior Investigator for another 21 years retiring at the age of 62.

PFC Frederick Vokovan served in the U.S. Army from February 1949-July of 1952, receiving an Honorable Discharge. He earned a Korean Service Medal along with the UN Service Medal. 

He was preceded in death by his parents Rudolph Z. Vokovan who established Vokovan Sausage Company in Duluth and his mother Grace, whose father, Orrin “Pete” Young was the first Lighthouse Keeper at Split Rock Lighthouse. Also, by his brother Rudolph, sister Ruth Jugasek, and a son Gerald.

He is survived by his son James, his loving grandchildren Jeromy, Juley, Jay, Jason, Jenny, Michael and Brian, nieces and nephews, and many friends, especially his close friends Crystal and Joe who stayed with him the last few years and made sure everything was going well. A heartfelt thanks to Nicole F., Cassandra, Becca and Gail from Aspirus St. Luke’s Home Hospice care for assisting in care for Fred with dignity and comfort in his final days. Memorials are preferred to Aspirus St. Luke’s Home Hospice.

Visitation will be held on Thursday Feb. 20, 2025, from Noon until the 1PM Funeral Service in Dougherty Funeral Home. 600 E. 2nd St. Duluth, MN 55805. 218-727-3555. The burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Duluth Honor Guard.
