Fredrick M. Cummings, 74, of Fish Lake died suddenly on Monday, February 17, 2014 with his wife by his side.
Fred was born August 3, 1939 in Superior to Manley and Sophia Cummings and was raised in Iron River, where he graduated from Iron River High School. Fred served in France during peacetime for the US Army. Fred married Karin Anderson on December 1, 1962. He started his career on the great lakes as a deckhand in 1960, working his way to 1st Mate with the US Steel's Great Lakes Fleet. In 1980 Fred went to work in the office and retired in 2002 as Marine Superintendent. He was a member of the Propeller Club, The Romeo's Lunch Club and was a member of the board of the Maritime Museum; Fred loved the view from his home on Fish Lake; a perfect day was taking a pontoon ride and then dinner with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his uncle Nick (Dorothy) Pevach and his aunt Agnes and his dog, "Belle".
Fred is survived by his wife, Karin; son, John (Stephanie) Cummings; daughters, Anne (Cory) Thomas and Kirsten (Mike) Horvat; grandchildren, Derek, Nikki and Branden Thomas, Joey and Ryan Cummings and Jenna and Kyle Horvat; his sister Carol Scinocca and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7pm at Concordia Lutheran Church, 2501 Woodland Ave. Duluth, where visitation will continue Friday from 12 noon to the 1pm Services. Memorials directed to Lake Superior Marine Museum Association, PO Box 177 Duluth, MN, 55801-0177. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth. (218) 727-3555.
