Fredrick Sumner Haugen

Fredrick Sumner Haugen, age 95 of Duluth, died on December 27, 2024 at Solvay Hospice House in Duluth. He was born in Chicago, IL on September 9, 1929 to parents, Helge and Ruth (Sumner) Haugen. Fred graduated from Duluth Central High School and Dunwoody College in Minneapolis. He enlisted in the Navy and proudly served his country during the Korean War. He married Mary Beth Paulson and together they raised one son, Scott.

Fred worked in automotive sales for most of his career. Fred had the mind and heart of an engineer, constantly working on projects in his garage. There, he built 3 cars; various RC airplanes; and the Pietenpol Air Camper, a two-seater airplane. The last he knew, it was still being flown in Texas.

In retirement, Fred wintered in Arizona and spent the rest of the year in Duluth. He enjoyed his time golfing, fishing, and flying giant-scale RC planes. He moved in many different social circles—most important of which was being an usher at First Lutheran Church.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and wife. Fred is survived by his son, Scott Haugen; grandson, Brann Haugen; girlfriend, Alphea Iverson; and nephews, Curtis & Craig Zablocki.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at 11:00 am with a visitation starting at First Lutheran Church, 1100 E Superior Street, Duluth, MN 55802.
