Gary Warren Thompson of Duluth, MN, died on March 19, 2024. He was 80 years old. Gary was born to parents, Warren & Gladys (Quigley) Thompson on April 24, 1943. Born and raised in Duluth, Gary was a graduate of Central High School. He attended UMD and served his county in the United States Navy. He worked as a marine engineer at Sperry Marine for many years. Being able to utilize both his intellect and hands, it was the perfect job for Gary. On December 30, 1988, he married the love of his life, Kathy Olsen. Gary and his daughter, Nicole were thrilled to grow their family with the addition of Kathy and her children. Gary and Kathy spent 35 wonderful years together. They loved to travel, playing golf on some of the best golf courses the States have to offer. He had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. He would entertain Kathy on their many adventures with random facts and history of every state they drove through. He completed every one of the online Great Courses. He was also a skilled craftsman. He spent countless hours working in his woodshop, referred to as, “The West Wing”. If Gary liked something or found it interesting, he poured himself into it. Whether that be golfing, woodworking, reading, or most importantly – his family. Gary served many decades with the Rice Lake Volunteer Fire Department, and it was his greatest honor to serve as Chief.
He is preceded in death by his parents; step-children, Bruce and Kerry (Suzanne) Olsen; and brother, Duane Thompson (Jan Davidson). He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Kathy Thompson; daughter, Nicole (Chris) Wood; step-children, Cindy Gressman, Keith Olsen, and Craig Olsen; grandchildren, Anja & Elizabeth, Josh (Holly) & Jessica (Alex), Brittany, Morgan & David, Jordan & Nathan; great-grandchildren, Owen, Hudson, Ames and Jack; sister, Janice (David) Schmitt; and many extended family and friends.
