George William Lancour beloved husband, dad, papa, and friend passed away peacefully at St. Luke’s Hospital on Thursday, February 23, 2023, after a brief illness. He was 78 years old. George, a lifelong resident of Duluth, was born on May 26, 1944, to parents, Louis & Dorothy (Krouse) Lancour. On October 12, 1968, he married the love of his life, Kathleen (Kathy) Borough, and spent the next 54 years at her side. Together they lovingly raised two children, Joe and Angie.
As a young man, George was drafted into the United States Army and served in Vietnam. He was later awarded a Purple Heart medal for the sacrifices he made while serving his country. Following his return to the states, he pursued a lengthy career in the tree service industry. He worked at Arrowhead Tree Service for several years before eventually retiring from Rick’s Tree Service. Over the years, he shared many stories of his working days and was proud of the relationships he built along the way.
George loved spending time with family and friends. He made fast friends of most anyone he met, sharing a story and a smile readily. He was known for his quick wit and bad jokes. He was truly the life of the party and will be dearly missed at family gatherings.
Over the years, George enjoyed camping trips with family and friends, spending time at the hunting shack, fishing, playing golf and playing in pool leagues. He liked spending time with friends at the Owl’s Club on Friday nights. In his spare time, George took pride in keeping his vehicles shiny and clean. Family often joked that if you came to visit George and Kathy with a dirty car, it would be clean by the time you left. George was also a long-time member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church where he helped sell Christmas trees each year.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Dorothy; and sisters, Mary Ann, Pat, and Pam. George is survived by his wife, Kathy; children, Joe (Missy) Lancour, and Angela (Eric) Kyper; grandchildren, Ryan & Nathan; and many extended family members and friends.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Martinelli, Dr. Aebly and the rest of the caring staff at the St. Luke’s Hospital ICU and Hospice Unit for the wonderful care that he received during his stay.
George’s visitation is from 10-11am, Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second Street, Duluth, MN, with a Memorial Service beginning at 11am. Following the service, lunch will be served at one of his favorite restaurants, VIP Pizza, 1201 Tower Ave, Superior, WI.
