Gloria Marilyn Mitchell, 87, of Duluth, passed away on December 28, 2014. Gloria was born on August 2, 1927 to Arthur and Alvilda Sjolund in Duluth. She graduated from Duluth Central Senior High School in 1945.
Gloria loved being a Mom and Grandmother with all her heart. Her Christian faith and love of Jesus Christ shaped her life and she was active in Christian fellowship. Making the people around her feel special was one of the greatest gifts she shared. Her children thought she was a stunning mom, but Gloria’s message was to look for the beauty within. Gloria looked forward to time spent on the beaches of Lake Superior and Minnesota’s lakes. She loved picking wild strawberries and making her special jam. Her children and grandchildren could tell you she loved to be dressed in pink. Her lemon meringue pie and chocolate chip cookies baked in her Lakeside home were favorite requests. She was proud of getting her driver’s license at age 53. Gloria, also known affectionately as “Lolo” was loved by many and will be greatly missed by her family.
Gloria was preceded in death by husband, Grover E. Mitchell Jr., infant daughter, Barbara; parents, Arthur and Alvilda Sjolund; brother Arthur Sjolund Jr; and sister Nancy Donahue.
She is survived by her sons, James-grandchildren Owen and Amy; Donald (Lorraine)-grandchildren Will and Cameron; daughters, Rosanne Mitchell-grandchild Michael; Joanne Martens (Keith)-grandchildren Gretchen Mitchell, Charissa and Jacob Nagle, Nicholas and Lucas Martens); great-grandchildren Hunter and Ryker; sister Patricia Carls; her brother Richard Sjolund and extended family.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00am, Saturday, January 3, 2015 in the Great Lakes Gospel Church, 4501 Glenwood Street, Duluth, MN, 55804, with visitation at 10:00am.
