Gregory Winfield Brown

Gregory Winfield Brown, 87, of Duluth, passed away peacefully on Dec. 25. 

He was born in Des Moines, IA and attended Roosevelt high school in Des Moines, Kemper Military School, Iowa State University (B.S. Management) and Northwestern University (MBA). He was in ROTC and served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves. His first job after college was working for a U.S. Steel manufacturing plant South Works in Chicago.

Greg met the love of his life, Mary Isabel Tod, in Chicago. They married there in 1963 and had two daughters. The family moved to rural Cass City, Michigan in 1972 where they raised their children and had a big vegetable garden.

Greg was devoted to the Episcopal church including serving as a lay reader at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Bad Axe, MI for many years and being a founding member of the Church of the Good Shepard in Decatur, AL and very active member for over 20 years.

During the 1960s while living in Chicago, Greg and Mary were were involved in the fair housing movement, the Christian Family Movement, and were supporters of Planned Parenthood. In their later years, they volunteered as homework tutors for the Boys and Girls Club of Decatur, AL, Habitat for Humanity, and Kairos prison ministry.

Greg loved books, libraries, reading, singing and music. He enjoyed singing with the Victory Chorus in Duluth.

Greg was preceded in death by his wife Mary Isabel Tod Brown and his parents Edith Margaret Hitchcock Brown Jontz and Merl Albert Brown

He is survived by his children Margaret Brown-Sica (David Sica) and Aimee Brown and by his grandchildren Francesca and Bruno Sica.

A celebration of life will be planned sometime later this year out of state.
