Helen M. Potvien, 90, of Duluth, passed away peacefully, with family by her side on Monday May 11, 2015. She was born in Duluth on March 27, 1925 to Paul and Angela Lutar. Helen was a Denfeld High School graduate Class of 1943, and married Garney Potvien on May 20, 1950 in Duluth, MN. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church and its St. Margaret's Guild. Helen had worked as a Teacher's Aide at St. James School until her retirement. Our loving mother enjoyed spending time with her family which was her greatest gift. Helen will be affectionately remembered as a very loving, caring, and supportive mother and grandmother, and will be greatly missed by all. Helen's family would like to thank the staff at Primrose Retirement Community and the staff at St. Mary's Essentia Hospice for all of the care, kindness, and support they provided to her.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband Garney, son Alan, brothers and sisters Mary, Eli, Anne, Jule, John, Joe, Paul, and Fr. Bill Lutar.
Helen is survived by her children Monica Quirt, Gerard (Mary), Renee (Scott) Esson, Anita (Fred) Rouse, Tim, and Tom, daughter-in-law Linda Potvien, grandchildren Cliff, April, Angela, John, Dylan, Dustin, Tessa, Marc, Jay, Sara, Matthew, Christopher, Kate, and Blaise, great-grandchildren Chelsea, Holly, Darren, Davina, Damen, Avery, Norah, and Mary, many nieces and nephews, and close friends Helene Williams and Diane Seaman.
Visitation will be held on Friday May 15, 2015 from 5PM to 7PM in Dougherty Funeral Home 600 E. 2nd Street, Duluth and will continue on Saturday from 10AM until the 11AM Services in the Funeral Home. Rev. Frank Perkovich Officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. 218-727-3555.
