James Walter DeRoche

Age 91 of Duluth, went home to his Lord and loving wife on October 31, 2022. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife of 71 years, Joyce; daughter, Cindi Pybas-DeRoche; and siblings, Richard, Robert, Michael, and Jacqueline.

As young boys, Jim and his 4 brothers always stayed active: playing baseball, bowling together as a team, golfing, and playing horseshoes. This time spent with his brothers developed Jim’s zest for life and love of family. Throughout his life, Jim was devout in his faith. He was baptized, confirmed, and married at St. Jean the Baptist Church in Duluth's west end. Shortly after marrying Joyce Waldron, his high school sweetheart, Jim was drafted into the Army. He served 2 years in Okinawa, Japan during the Korean War.

Through the GI bill, he received his electrician’s journeyman card. His dedication and work ethic were on display every night as he left the cement plant; always the last to leave, locking the doors on his way out. He finished his career at Duluth Mesabi & Iron Range Railroad. In retirement, Jim and Joyce enjoyed their winters in Yuma, Arizona, where Jim could golf almost every day. They built their home and raised their family in Rice Lake. They were active members at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, where Jim was heavily involved in the Knights of Columbus.

Jim is survived by sons, Steve & Brian; grandson, Trevor; and siblings, Gerald, and Patricia. Visitation will be at 9:00 a.m., Thursday, November 10, 2022, followed by a 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, 1419 St Benedict St, Duluth, MN 55811. Interment at Calvary Cemetery on a later date.
