James (Jim) Philip Shykes, age 66, of Hermantown, Minnesota, passed away with his family by his side on Friday, April 26, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents, Phillip and Carol Shykes. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Karen; his children, Ryan (Deena) and Lindsey Shykes; grandchildren, Aveyah, Hadley, and Bristol Shykes; his brother, Tim (Pam) Shykes; and nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives and friends.
He worked at the family-started business, Miller Mall Auto Parts for 45 years, and he started his own business, Miller Mall Machine Shop, in 2007. He also owned and operated a paint store, AFI Paint Supply, in 2010. When he was not hard at work in his earlier years, he was a volunteer firefighter for 15 years for the Hermantown Fire Department.
Jim loved racing cars, and he had a passion for building engines. He was an avid fan of the outdoors, and he spent many years playing golf with his father and son. When he wasn't puttering around the house, he was spending time with his dogs and giving them plenty of treats. Jim enjoyed going out and meeting with business associates and friends. Wherever he would go, there would always be someone he knew who he'd go and talk to. He loved to laugh and joke with his friends, and he had many, many, stories to tell.
There will be a celebration of life at the Pike Lake Golf and Beach Club on Friday, May 10, 2024, starting at 5 pm.
