James Richard Smith of Duluth, 86, died Saturday, July 27, 2019 in his home surrounded by his family. Born in Duluth to James and Teresa Smith he attended Cathedral High School and then served honorably with US Marine Corps B Company during the Korean Conflict. Jim retired from the Duluth Fire Department after 38 years of service. He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, VFW Post 137, American Legion #71, Duluth Retired Fire Fighters Association. He volunteered at Essentia Garden Café for many years and enjoyed spending time at the family cabin, hunting, fishing and watching sports. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Robert; brothers-in-law, Bob, Pete and Tom Barnstorf; sister-in-law, Marge Mudrak. Survivors include his wife of 63 years Marie; daughters, Tracey Albrecht, Diane (Stacy) Seim and Julie Smith and son Paul Smith; grandchildren, Carley (Ferris), T.J. (BreeAnna), Braden, David, Brianna, Adria (Steven), Scott, Evie and six great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Virginia Smith and Carol Brennan; brother-in-law, James Barnstorf and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, August 4, 2019 in Dougherty Funeral Home and continuing from 10:00 until the 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial Monday, August 5, 2019 in St. John’s Catholic Church, 4230 St. John’s Avenue.
