Janice Meyer

May 17, 1925 — June 8, 2016

Janice Faye Meyer, 91, of Duluth, passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 8, 2016 at the Benedictine Health Center.

Born to Carl and Eunice Johnson on May 17, 1925 in the small farming community of Osmond, Neb., Janice Johnson later moved to Sioux City, Iowa after high school for work. It was there that she met her loving husband Edward Joseph Meyer of Duluth and the two were married on May 10, 1945 until his death in September 1998.

The couple moved to Duluth shortly after and began a family and a lifetime of adventures together, which included family fishing trips and journeys across the country with family and friends.

Janice devoted her life to her children and her church.  She raised four boys and one girl in Duluth’s East Hillside neighborhood, and the family’s home was the center-point for countless celebrations, holidays and time spent together.  Generations of family and friends were lured to her dining room table as much for her home cooking as her joyous smile and infectious laugh.

Janice was equally devoted to the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Duluth, being a member of the congregation for the past 71 years, serving the lord up until her death. Family and friends will also remember her passion for cooking, baking and her loyalty to the Minnesota Twins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and brother Carl Johnson, as well as five brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law, who were a significant part of her life.

Janice is survived by her children, Dick (Jane), Bob (Marcy), Ed Jr. (Jane), Tom (Sue) and Sharon (Raan) Aalgaard, brother Ron Johnson, sister Florence (Lee) Barbour, sister-in-law Norda Johnson, as well as eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

VISITATION: 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday June 10, at Dougherty Funeral Home in Duluth and from 10a.m. Saturday, June 11 until the 11 a.m. Funeral Service, in  Faith Lutheran Church, 51st Avenue East and Glenwood Street in Duluth.
