Janice “Jan” Margaret (Jacobs) Bishop, 82, of Hermantown died peacefully surrounded by her family on May 2nd, 2017 at Essentia Health, St. Mary’s Medical Center.
Jan was born on April 16th, 1935 in Duluth, MN to Stanley and Julia Jacobs. She married Bernard (Bud) Bishop on June 2, 1956. They moved to their farm in Palisade, MN, where Jan worked side-by-side with Bud. She also pursued a career in nursing in nearby Grand Rapids.
Jan attended St. John’s Catholic School, then Stanbrook Hall Catholic High School. She was captain of the basketball team and played golf, caddied at Ridgeview, and enjoyed skiing. She played drums and sax in the band.
Janice attended St. Mary’s School of Nursing. She cared for brand new life in the nursery at St. Mary’s and end of life in hospice homecare. In between, she worked in St. Mary’s Health Service, nursing homes including Aftenro Home where she recently lived. She was also a camp nurse at Concordia Russian Camp.
Jan was a wonderful mother to two children, Deborah and Daniel. She shared her gifts of kindness, love, and laughter with her silly sense of humor. Jan enjoyed reading, cooking, and her flower garden. She enjoyed many family camping trips and the Jacobs family cabin. She was happiest when caring for others, including her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She would sweetly sing her special lullabies while rocking the little ones. She will be greatly missed.
The family would like to thank the wonderful care staff at Aftenro and Essentia in Duluth for providing excellent and loving care.
Jan is survived by her daughter Deborah (John) Lepak of Duluth; son Daniel (Pam) Bishop of Duluth; grandchildren Scott (Devaney) and Branden (Loni) Bishop, Samantha and Rebekah Lepak; great grandsons Dalyn and Breckyn Bishop; sisters, Donna Peterson, Liz (Carl) Pass, Therese (Jim) Wisocki; and brother Ed (Ginger) Jacobs.
