Jeanne Nisius, 78, of Duluth passed away on November 13, 2023.
She graduated from Morgan Park High School and UMD with a degree in Elementary Education. Her career began as a third grade teacher at Hermantown Elementary School. When her children were born, she stayed home to raise them and worked part time as a substitute teacher, tutor and pre-school and Sunday School teacher. She loved garage sales and antiquing and turned that hobby into a career when she opened and co-owned the Chequer Board – an antique, gift and consignment shop in the heart of Pike Lake. She loved being with people and socializing and went on to sell real estate and advertising with Lake Superior Magazine and the Duluth News Tribune.
Jeanne met her husband Bill in 1969, and they celebrated 53 years of marriage. They enjoyed their days and nights on the lake at their home on Pike Lake, golfing, playing cards, and entertaining family and friends, including hosting many family reunions. Jeanne was an avid reader, loved to crochet, hit a garage sale and find a good deal.
Together they had two children, Laura (Nisius) Sieger and Greg Nisius. Jeanne enjoyed watching her kids’ activities and traveling as a family. Their house was the place everyone felt welcome and you could always find people gathering. They enjoyed their orange double decker pontoon that made many trips around the lake, and especially loved decorating it and participating in the annual 4th of July boat parade and activities.
Upon retirement, Bill & Jeanne spent their extended winters at Cypress Lakes in Lakeland, Florida, where they resided for 20 years with summers at Pike Lake. They loved the pool, golfing and day trips to Disney with their many friends. They also loved to travel taking several cruises and trips to Europe, Greece, Australia, Italy, Ireland, Mexico and more.
Jeanne adored her four grandchildren – Macy, Nya, Blake and Wyatt – and loved watching their activities and sports, swimming in the pool, taking golf card rides, and the many “happy hours” in Florida.
Jeanne was proceeded in death by her husband Bill; parents, Reinhard (Doone) and Margaret Soberg; and brother, Ron Soberg.
She is survived by children, Laura (Todd) Sieger, and Greg (Becca) Nisius; grandchildren Macy & Nya Sieger, and Blake & Wyatt Nisius.
A special thank you to the many compassionate caregivers at Edgewood Vista and Solvay Hospice House.
