John P. Mahoney, 96, Kenwood Avenue, formerly of East Anoka Street, died Sunday, March 23, 2014. John was born in Duluth to Grace and James Mahoney on September 8, 1917. John graduated in 1936 from Duluth Cathedral Boys High School. He was a lifelong member of St. John's Catholic Church.
John was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War ll. He was a Prisoner of War from 1944-1945. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. He retired in 1978 after a 30 year career with the St. Louis County Public Health Department. John loved God, his family and friends, and his country with a deep conviction.
John was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Grace and Margaret, brother James, and beloved wife of 71 years, Delima. John is survived by his daughter Ann (Richard Dolezal) Mahoney; sister Catherine McKenna; grandchildren: Shannon (Christopher) Lindsay, Gretchen (Tony Stensland) Karstens, Ryan McGivern, and Jennie (Steven) Hilleren. He is, as well, survived by great-grandchildren Paige, Mary, Catherine, Henry, and Matthew and many nieces and nephews.
We as family wish to thank Westwood Assisted Living and the Benedictine Health Center for their wonderful care of John.
Visitation: 5-7 pm with a prayer service at 7 pm on Thursday, March 27th at Dougherty Funeral Home. Visitation will continue Friday from 9-10 am at St. John's Catholic Church, 4230 St. John's Avenue. Burial will follow in Soldiers Rest at Forest Hill Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Duluth Honor Guard. Memorials preferred to St. John's Church School in Duluth.
