John liked to work using his hands. He was a skilled bricklayer and construction worker. He began working for J.D. He also built a sailboat, a wooden boat and two canoes. He was a gifted artist. Working with oil paints he particularly liked to paint outdoor scenes that usually included water. He was a member of Glen Avon Presbyterian Church and served on the Board of Trustees. He was a gun smith, enjoyed trap shooting and was an avid hunter. He especially enjoyed deer hunting with his dad, uncle, brother-in-law, son, and grandson at the deer shack. He loved spending time in the woods.
