Joseph Belcastro died peacefully on Wednesday. Born December 16, 1920 in Eveleth, he was the 1939 High School basketball free-throw champ, and studied pre-law at Eveleth Jr. College. In 1943, he joined the US Airforce after designing a self-lubricating pneumatic drill at Lockheed, which expedited production of WWII aircraft. He married Senia Neuha in 1945. He had a successful 37 year career with the St. Paul Pioneer Press as District Manager, initiating the paper's expansion into Wisconsin. The Belcastros were long-time members of the Cathedral of Our Lady where Joe served as Head Usher. Joe enjoyed his summers at the lake, camping, hunting and fishing, and many great trips to Basswood Lake. He spent this past summer with both his daughter and son doing the things he enjoyed most. A big thank you to the Benedictine Adult Day Service and the BHC staff for their comfort care these last days. Joe is survived by children; Tony (Judy) Belcastro, Jolane (John) Sundstrom; grandchildren, Jay (Kim), Tim (Laura), Joel and Anja; Great Grandaughters, Justine, Delaney, Abby, Vibeke and two Great Great Grandsons, Owen and Ashton. Memorials may be sent to the Benedictine Adult Day Service in Joe's name.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 30, 2013 in Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church with a gathering of family and friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. at church.
