Leo Buck

September 30, 1927 — June 2, 2013

Leo Allen Buck, age 85, a life-long resident of Lakewood Township, died peacefully on June 2nd in the home he built, with his family surrounding him. He bravely battled a diagnosis of Stage IV lung cancer for six and a half years.

He was the youngest son of Elmer and Carrie Buck and was preceded in death by sister Doris and brothers Earl, Mack, Swede and Bob.

Leo was a World War II Navy veteran. He was employed at Arrowhead Blacktop for 43 years, starting as a flagman and ending as the general superintendent. He was a member of Operating Engineers, and also a member of St. Michaels Church. He was a self-taught carpenter, mechanic and engineer, and fond of saying he could "fix anything but a broken heart". He passionately followed Twins and Vikings games.

He married Madonna Meyer in 1951, and together they raised three children; Carrie (Duane) Battisti, Lynn (Andrew) Wiemann, and Don (Donna) Buck. He was the proud grandfather of Bryan Buck, Anna Battisti (Jason) Arnebeck, Laura Battisti (Justin) Jerve, and Daniel Buck, and great granddaughter Audrianna Jerve, who he called Miss Beautiful. Other survivors include sisters Harriet Schiltz and Helaine Freudenberg, and many nieces and nephews.

At Leo's request, a private family service was held. It was his wish to express deep gratitude to the following: Drs. Ryden, Irons and Ketchum, and the staff of Essentia Health Lakeside Clinic, Oncology, Infusion, Radiation Therapy, and Hospice Home Care, and special friends Bill and Janice Hilliard, Jackie Paaso, and Frank Pickar.

A written memory of Leo would be deeply appreciated by his family. If desired, memorials can be directed to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, PO Box 1000, Dept 142 Memphis, TN 38148 (1-800-822-6344) or Solvay Hospice House.
Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth. (218)727-3555.
