Louis William "Bill" Sega, 76, of Duluth died September 13, 2013, surrounded by his wife and four children after a short illness with gall bladder cancer.
He was born March 31, 1937 in Chisholm, MN to Louis F. Sega and Mary (Govednik) Sega. Bill grew up in Chisholm, MN, played athletics, and graduated from Chisholm High School. He attended St. Thomas College, Hibbing Junior College, and graduated from Bemidji State College with a bachelor's degree in English and Social Studies. Bill played college football at Hibbing Junior College and Bemidji State College. He received a Master's degree in Counseling and Guidance from the University of Wisconsin, Superior.
Bill started his teaching career in 1960 at Red Lake Falls, MN, then moved to the Nashwauk Keewatin School District from 1961 to 1967. In 1967 Bill moved his young family to Duluth, MN to teach in the Duluth Public Schools. He taught for 20 years at Woodland Junior High and for 5 years at Denfeld High School. Bill enjoyed teaching and always found something good to say about each of his students.
Bill enjoyed high school athletics and refereed high school football, basketball, and baseball for many years. He was a member of: Iron Range Coaches and Officials Association, Tri-State Officials Association, MN State High School League, and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Bill was one of the first members of the Lake Superior Health Coordinating Council and the MN state Health Coordinating Council.
Bill loved the LORD Jesus and was a lector at church from the 1960's until present at St. John's Catholic Church in Duluth, MN. He was a Eucharistic Minister at St. John's and a Eucharistic Minister to the sick for more than 20 years in Minnesota, Tennessee, and Florida.
Once retired Bill kept active and produced radio talk shows at KDAL radio under the name "The Gunner." Bill loved to hunt and fish with his sons and brothers and his great passion in retirement was golf and playing with the Red Caps at Lester Park Golf Course. Bill worked for many years at Lester Park as a League Starter and Golf Ranger.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Mary Sega and his brother, Robert Sega.
Bill is survived by his High School sweetheart, best friend, and wife of 55 years, Patricia Marie (Greniuk) Sega; children, Tina Marie (Sega) Bain (R. Clark Bain Jr.), Theresa Sega Biancheri (Rob Biancheri), Tony Sega (Nicolle Brown), Tom Sega (Shari Duff Sega), and grandchildren: Mycah Bain Burns, R. Gentry Bain, Piper Bain, Estelle Bain, Selah Bain, Sterling Bain, Joseph Mercer, Sam Biancheri, Natalia Biancheri, Andrea Sega, and Grant Sega; brothers, Thomas (Roxann) Sega, Francis Sega and Michael (Holly) Sega; sister, Mary Lou (Mark) Werner and his sister-in-law, Allis Sega. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Bill and his family would like to thank Dr. Goueli, the Infusion Staff and Oncology Staff at St. Luke's for their loving care of Bill.
Visitation will be Monday from 5-7pm with a Rosary 5 pm at St. John's Catholic Church, 4230 St. John's Ave. Duluth, MN, where visitation will continue Tuesday from 10am to the 11am Mass of the Christian Burial. His ashes will be interred in Chisholm, MN. Memorials to St. John's Church. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth, (218) 727-3555.
