Lifelong Duluthian Lyle Bergal passed away peacefully on February 24, 2024. Lyle was born December 23, 1943 amidst a snowstorm at St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth to Harry and Ruth Bergal. He often recounted fond memories of his childhood in the Duluth area, especially with his sister Lonna Rae, extended family/ friends, and Jewish community. Lyle was bar mitzvahed in Sioux City, Iowa, where his family lived for a short time before returning to Duluth. Lyle attended and graduated from Duluth Central High School and UMD. Lyle met his wife Lynn in Duluth and they were married in Stillwater in 1984. They would have been married 40 years in March.
His favorite times were spent with his wife raising their two children, Lauren and Alex. Quite simply, he was an exceptional dad. Lyle was known for his dry sense of humor, his personable character, and commitment to his family. Most everyone has a story about him to share. Lyle was also well known for wearing only bow ties and has taught the art of tying a bow tie to many. A family favorite was Lyles spaghetti sauce that was always requested at family gatherings. It was delicious.
Lyle never tired of the beauty of Lake Superior and watching the power of the lake during a good storm. Lyle will be missed.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Ruth Bergal. He is survived by his wife, Lynn, children Lauren (Jake) Portinga and Alex (Ally) Bergal, grandchildren Ben and Ari Portinga and Ruth Bergal, and beloved sister Lonna Rae Silverman. Along with his sisters and brothers-in-laws and nieces and nephews and great friends.
