Lyle F. Zimmerman, 91, of Hermantown died Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at Chris Jensen Health Center. Lyle was born August 30, 1926 in Bluffton Township near Wadena, Minnesota to Clarence and Daisy Zimmerman. He served in the US Navy as a Coxswain on the USS Guadalupe during World War II. He later met Joyce Smith and they were married on July 18, 1947. He built their family home in Hermantown where they raised their three children.
Lyle was employed as a Carman for the DM & IR Railroad and served as the Local Chairman of the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen. In his retirement, he enjoyed bird hunting, gardening, and working outdoors. He was a jack of all trades.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Harold, Kenneth, Edson, Clifford, Hazel, Edith, Wauneta, and Violet.
Lyle is survived by his wife Joyce; children Joy, Paul (Sybil) Zimmerman, and Kay Lackner; grandchildren Shawn Gallagher, Eric (Kara) Zimmerman, Shannon Zimmerman, and Ashley Lackner; great grandson William Zimmerman; and brother Cecil (Sandy) Zimmerman.
Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7pm at Dougherty Funeral Home. The visitation will continue Friday at 10am, followed by the 11am memorial service and military honors accorded by the Duluth Honor Guard. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E 2nd Street, Duluth - (218 ) 727-3555.
