Margaret Cane

September 29, 1927 — August 18, 2012

Margaret "Peg" Cane, 84, of Duluth, died on Saturday Aug. 18, 2012 in St. Luke's Hospital with her family by her side. She was born on Sept. 29, 1927 in Brainerd, MN to Ben and Agnes (Peck) Anderson. She married Melvin Cane on April 18, 1953 in Pequot Lakes, MN.

Margaret graduated from the College of St. Scholastica in 1950 with a degree in nursing. She began her nursing career at the Universiy of Minnesota Hospital working as head operating room nurse. After marrying and returning to Duluth she trained LPN's at Miller( Miller Dwan) and St. Luke's Hospitals. Continuing in her role as a teacher, she was hired as an instructor of medical-surgical nursing in 1970 at the College of St. Scholastica. While raising a family and working full-time she went on to attain her masters degree in education. In her twenty years of employment at St. Scholastica, besides her teaching duties, she was instrumental in the development of the RN Completion Program, which became the forerunner for other off campus management programs. She retired in 1990 and in 2011, she was presented with the Sister Ann Edward Scanlon Award which honors an alumnus who manifests dedication to his/her community and to the College of St. Scholastica. Margaret was a mentor to many faculty and nursing students throughout her extensive career.

Margaret was a member of St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church, the VFW Ladies' Auxiliary, and an active board member of the Lake Superior Life Care Center.

Margaret loved to travel near and far with family and friends. She cherished spending time with her sister, Corinne. She was an avid reader; the #1 fan of the UMD Women's Soccer Team, and never missed the chance to attend her grandchildren's sporting events. She opened her heart and home to all, including many international students.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Melvin; brother, Don; brother-in-law, Don Coffey.

Margaret is survived by her children, Kathleen (Shoken) Masuoka of Fukuoka, Japan; Barbara, Mary, Gregory(Patti) Cane all of Duluth; Rose (Damian)Topousis of Wayzata,MN; grandchildren, Halima(Johnny) Cegur, Leina (Satoshi) Kamada, Keisa, Emily, Alex, Amanda, Kasey, Taylor; great grandchildren, Seigo, Henry, Shiho; sister, Corinne Coffey of Manitoba, Canada; sister-in-law, Valerie Anderson of Las Vegas, NV; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5-7 PM with a prayer service at 6:30 PM in the Dougherty Funeral Home Chapel.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012 in St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral the day of the mass.

Margaret's family wishes to thank the caring and dedicated staffs at the Fountains at Lakeshore, St. Luke's, and Fresenius Duluth Dialysis.

Memorials may be directed to the Lake Superior Life Care Center.



Interment will be held at 1:05 PM Friday in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN.
