Margaret Berg

Margaret Eleanor Berg, 95, Duluth, a long-time resident of Woodland, died Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at the Benedictine Health Center.

Margaret, the first of four children, was born July 15, 1921 in St. Mary’s Hospital to Charles Arvid and Evelyn Schreiber Berg.  The family bought their home in Woodland in 1925.  She attended Cobb Elementary and East Junior High, graduated from Stanbrook Hall High School in 1939, and attended the College of St. Scholastica.

She worked for 14 years as office manager of The Duluth Community Chest (forerunner of The United Way).  Margaret was then employed as cashier and office manager for the Wheeler Agency of the New England Life Insurance Company for 28 years, retiring in 1983.

During her working years, she was active in the Duluth Business and Professional Women’s Club and served that organization as Minnesota State President in 1972 and later as a member of the National Bylaws Committee.  She was also active in The Soroptimist Club, a women’s service organization.  From 1980-1983 Margaret was president of The Duluth YWCA and began her volunteer service with The Friends of the Duluth Public Library and The Duluth Woman’s club.  She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Woodland.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Dorothy Maloney of Dayton, Ohio.  She is survived by her sister Evelyn Nolan of Omaha, Nebraska, her brother Charles (Chuck) Berg of Midlothian, Virginia and by many nieces and nephews.

Visitation:  Friday, Oct. 7, 2016 from 10 AM until the 11 AM Mass of Christian Burial at The Benedictine Health Center’s chapel.  Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.  If so desired, memorial may be directed to the organization of your choice.  Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E.
