Mark Ralph Eckman succumbed to prostate cancer on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at St Mary's Medical Center, where he was born 75 years earlier. Mark grew up in Duluth’s west end, and graduated from Denfeld High (1960) and Gustavus Adolphus College (1963). He graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School (1967), then was an internal medicine resident at the University of Rochester (NY) Hospital and then an infectious disease fellow at the University of Colorado. He served two years as a U.S. army obligated volunteer, including a year in Vietnam. Mark dedicated his career to serving the Duluth community, where he practiced internal medicine with an infectious disease specialty at the Duluth Clinic for thirty years.
In his community he was active on research boards as well as church and civic groups with human rights initiatives. Other passions include forestry conservation (especially promoting white pine regeneration), playing tennis, traveling and catching a powder ski day. He will be remembered for his intellectual curiosity, quiet generosity, and commitment to his family and career.
Predeceased by his parents Dr. Ralph J. Eckman and Irene Kennebrook. He will be dearly missed by wife Mary, children Jennifer (Eric Bakke), John (Jo), Charles, Johanna Gennrich (Jeff), James (partner Sara Borer) and five grandchildren, brother Dr. Matthew Eckman (Kay) and sister Margaret Anderson (Rich) and their children and grandchildren.
