Johnson
Marshall F. Johnson, 82, of Duluth, went to be with his Lord peacefully at the Minnesota Veterans Home, Silver Bay on Wednesday, January 22, 2014.
He was born July 21, 1931 in Mpls to Rudie and Elsie Johnson. In 1949 he graduated from Washburn High School and joined the Navy in 1953. He was proud of his time in the Navy as a pilot and he sang in the Navel Cadet Choir while in Pensacola, Fl.
On January 1, 1954 he married Nancy Piispanen and they were able to celebrate 60 years together.
Marshall pursued a degree in education at the U of M, majoring in music and math. He taught for four years in Silver Lake, MN. In 1964 he moved to Duluth and taught at Washington Jr. and then Woodland Jr. for 31 years. He was active in coaching hockey for the Glenn Avon Rink from 1960 to 1979. He also enjoyed skating with the senior hockey team.
He sang in several choirs and also directed some. For a time he directed the
Community Ed. Band at Woodland and also played with the Community Band in Proctor.
He enjoyed tennis, photography and camping trips with the family. He also enjoyed time at the cabin on Woman Lake, MN.
He is survived by his wife Nancy; children Cathy McGovern, Marshall (Karen), Leisa Johnson (Jim), Chris (Vicki); grandchildren Luisa (Adam) Laila, Matthew (Heather), Loginn, Quincy; great grandchildren Elisheva, Abigail, Nathanael, Aubrey; two sisters Marian (Bill) Dirks and Carol of Duluth, many special nieces and nephews and pet dog Mandy.
The family would like to thank all the caring staff at MVH and the hospice team for the loving care given Marshall.
Visitation will be Sunday, from 4-6pm in the Dougherty Funeral Home. Visitation will continue Monday from 11:00 am to the 12:00 pm Noon funeral service at Lakeview Covenant Church, 1001 Jean Duluth Rd., followed by military honors accorded by the Duluth Honor Guard.
