Mary Sundland

Mary Elizabeth Sundland, 91, of Duluth, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2020.  She was born on November 16, 1928, in Duluth, to Roger and Beatrice Brown.

Mary graduated from Cathedral High School in 1946 and went on to earn an Elementary Education Degree at UMD, while teaching dance for Arthur Murray Dance Studio. She married Richard Sundland in 1956, and they were blessed with six-children.  In 1973, Dick constructed their dream home on Schultz Lake, where the family created a lifetime of memories.

Mary loved spending time with her family out on the boat, swimming, fishing and snowmobiling. She also enjoyed bowling, playing volleyball, and was an active member and President of the Y-Wives. Mary's true joy was bringing her family together for dinners filled with love and laughter. She was their biggest encourager, supporter and advocate.Mary was often heard saying, “Life is Wonderful!”  Her love for life was truly contagious.

She was preceded in death by parents, Roger and Beatrice; husband, Richard; and brother, Roger.

Mary is survived by children, Terrie Sundland, Debbie (Jay) Juten, Patti (Al) Hansen, Stacie (Gary) Juten, Rick (Amy) Sundland, and Steve (Miranda) Sundland, grandchildren, Mike (Lisa), Joann (Hans), Angie (Adam), Britney, Guy (Madi), Gentri, Chris (Naomi), Nick (Alicia) Tim, Alicia, Kolton, Tanner, Ian, Broc, Blake, Brett, and Ben; great-grandchildren, Ben, Elsie, Cece, Will, Lexie, Ryan, Amiya, Jacob, Tucker, Raegan, and Holland; brothers, Gerald (Mary) Brown, Gordon Brown; and other family and friends.

The family would like to thank the numerous caregivers that helped Mary thrive in the later years of life. You were a true blessing.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be 11AM Wednesday, March 11, 2020, with visitation one-hour prior in St John’s Catholic Church, 4230 St Johns Ave, Duluth, MN 55803.
