Mary Ann Gilbert

Mary Ann Gilbert, 79 of Hermantown passed away peacefully on August 11, 2016 in her home surrounded by her loving family, friends and caregivers.

Mary Ann was born on July 6, 1937 in Duluth, MN to Karl and Myrtle (Nelson) Peterson.  She attended Hermantown Schools and graduated in 1955.  She grew up attending Salem Lutheran Church in Hermantown.  She married Larry Gilbert of Proctor, MN on September 3, 1955 at Salem Lutheran Church.  They lived together in Hermantown for the past 61 years.  She was long standing member of Grace Lutheran church.  For the past four years Pastor Norland of New Life Church has provided spiritual support for her and the family.

Mary Ann and Larry were the owners and operators of Gilbert Electric. Along with Gilbert Electric, Mary Ann was instrumental in the development and administration of several family businesses including; Midway Lumber, JLG Enterprises and Trillium Services, Inc.

Mary Ann and Larry enjoyed fishing, canoeing and camping with their family.  She loved to travel, visiting Sweden with her sister Lois, spending the winters in Florida, travelling to Mexico, New York City, Las Vegas, Hawaii and cruising the Caribbean.  Mary Ann also took great pleasure watching her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren grow and succeed in sports, academics and the arts throughout the years.

She is preceded in death by her parents Karl (Myrtle) Peterson, her sister Lois Gronlund and daughter Julie Gilbert.  She is survived by her husband Larry Gilbert, her children Wendy (Jim) Annis, Jeffrey (Trudy) Gilbert, Gary (Terry) Gilbert, her grandchildren Brian (Kati) Burcar Annis, Amanda Burcar-Annis, Karl (Sydney) Gilbert, Jenna Gilbert, Julia Gilbert, Jillayne Gilbert and great grandchildren Caleb Annis, Grace Annis and Elin Annis.

Mary Ann’s family would like to thank Pastor Norland and all of the caregivers that made it possible for her to remain in her home for the last four years and for all of their loving care and support.

Visitation will be on Monday, August 15 5pm – 7pm at Dougherty Funeral Home located at 600 East 2 Street in Duluth, MN.  Visitation will continue on Tuesday, August 16 at 10am at Grace Lutheran Church, Funeral service at 11am.  Grace Lutheran Church is located at 5454 Miller Trunk Hwy in Hermantown, MN.  Burial will be at Bethany Cemetery in Hermantown, MN.
