Maryanne Evensen

December 28, 1925 — August 24, 2021

Maryanne (Schmelitz) Evensen, age 95, passed away on August 24, 2021 after a long battle with dementia.

Maryanne worked at UMD in various departments for 20 years, retiring from the Bureau of Business and Economic Research in 1989. She found her greatest joy as a homemaker, wife, mom and grandma and was active in many organizations including:  St. John’s Women's Auxiliary, Cub Scouts, Girl  Scouts, AARP and Lakeshore Nursing Home which eventually transitioned to Ecumen Lakeshore.   She moved into Lakeshore in fall of 2010 and volunteered at their onsite preschool.   She was also active for many years in a Sewing Club with her cherished group of friends.   She was a lifetime member of St. John’s Church where she was married, raised her children and taught Sunday School.

Maryanne was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, baker, wordsmith, and seamstress. She had an intense love of her family and strived to make everyone comfortable and well fed. And she loved to polka.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, Wesley; her mother and father Antonetta (Pilarski) and Anthony Schmelitz; 3 siblings, Hubert Schmelitz, Bernice Gooler and Georgetta Johns.

Maryanne is survived by her children: Kay (Vern) Holsclaw, Wes (Debbie) Evensen, Mark (Margaret) Evensen, Ann (Dennis) Glore, and Judi (Craig) Morwood; 16 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; 8 great-great grandchildren; and long time family friend, Judy Skafte.

Maryanne’s family is eternally grateful for the loving care, which often went above and beyond, that she received at Ecumen Lakeshore and St. Luke’s Hospice during the last years of her life.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, August 31, 2021, at St.John’s Catholic Church and continue until the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial with Fr. Seth Gogolin as celebrant. Interment will be in Forest Hill cemetery where she will be buried in the veterans section next to her husband.

“Goodnight, sweet dreams and God bless you” our loving Mom and Grandma.
