Melvin Erling Bergman, 89, of Duluth died peacefully, May 30, 2018 at Ecumen Lakeshore Health & Rehabilitation Center. He was born October 29, 1928 in Virginia, MN to Erick Anders and Alma Linnea (Kamb) Bergman. Mel married Madonna M. Weber August 20, 1955 in Austin MN.
Mel dedicated his career to teaching business and accounting at Duluth Central High School, and he coached Duluth Central Hockey for many years. He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and time at Crane Lake with family and friends. He was a world traveler, seeing all seven continents. Mel modeled the value of hard work to his family, and he was always very proud of the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, brothers Erick and Elmer, nephew Bill Bergman.
He is survived by his children Thomas (Rebecca) Bergman, Lisa Bergman, Jim (Anne Marie) Bergman, and Amy (David) Onken, grandchildren Matthew (Katherine), Andrew (Jennie), Laura, John, Daniel, Hannah, Tanner, Emily, Maddy, and Grace, and a great-granddaughter Clara.
Visitation will be held from 10AM until the 11AM Mass of Christian Burial, Friday June 8th, 2018 in St. John’s Catholic Church, 4230 St. John’s Ave, Duluth, MN 55803. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. 2nd Street, Duluth MN 55805. 218-727-3555.
