Mildred Thira (Bradburn) Barnes, 90, died July 28, 2019 at Ecumen Lakeshore Duluth.
Millie was born November 1, 1928, the youngest of the eight children of Gertrude and Christian Bradburn of Littlefork, MN. After graduating from Littlefork High School she became a registered nurse, having earned her RN degree at St. Luke's School of Nursing, Duluth, in 1949. She spent her nursing career in the obstetrics departments at Charles T. Miller Hospital, St. Paul, and St. Luke's Hospital, Duluth. Millie loved children, and assisted with the deliveries of hundreds of babies over the years.
She married Charles T. Barnes at Glen Avon Presbyterian Church on September 1, 1950. Their marriage was a model of devotion and love for 69 years. Millie was an active member at Glen Avon, serving as a Deacon and as a member of many committees and volunteer efforts. She and Chuck retired in 1993 and moved to Bella Vista, Arkansas where they joined Bella Vista Community Church and attended weekly bible study groups. They made many dear friends in Bella Vista and greatly enjoyed many years of retirement there. They returned to Duluth in 2007 to be near family and friends here.
Millie loved to host large gatherings of friends and family, and did so frequently. She was a loving mother to her four children and a warm and fun-loving grandmother. Millie's grandchildren enjoyed riding the small red Jeep, learning to golf, and all manner of celebrations she organized. Her sense of humor was infectious. She was recently blessed to become great-grandmother to baby Rose.
Millie was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings Henry, Claude, Ralph, Muriel, Margaret, John & Donald.
She is survived by her beloved husband Chuck, daughters Jan Barnes of Edina; Joie (Tim) Lee of Duluth and children Kate (Cole) Scattarelli, John (Sarah) Acheson and baby Rose, Annie Acheson, Dan and Doug Lee; Susan (Bruce Elliott) of St. Paul and children Max and Charlie Elliott; and son Robert (Sarah) Barnes of Duluth and children Christian, Joseph, and Claire Barnes. She is also survived by sister-in-law Marilyn Bradburn, sisters and brothers in-law Nancy and Ken McKenna and David and Edie Barnes and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends whom she dearly loved. Sincere thanks from the family to her wonderful caregivers and friends at Ecumen Duluth and St. Luke's hospice.
