Norma Jane Johnson, age 91, of Jay Street, Duluth, passed away Friday, May 15, 2015 at Solvay Hospice House.
Norma was born in Shipman Hospital in Ely, Minnesota to John Anderson and Mary (Toutloff) Anderson on February 14, 1924. Norma attended Ely Schools, the University of Minnesota and Haskell Business College in Lawrence, Kansas.
She married Alfred (Bud) Johnson in Ely on September 11, 1948, with a wedding reception at Burntside Lodge. Norma was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church where she was: a Cub Scout den mother; Girl Scout leader; Women's Council Member; and a member of the Funeral Committee and the Jammers.
She worked for: the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Chicago; Harcourt, Brace, Jovanovich in Duluth as the Executive Secretary; and at WDSE (PBS) in Duluth as an Administrative Assistant. Norma was a member of: the Duluth Woman's Club; Altrusa International Club; Lakeshore Auxiliary and the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa. She was named Twin Ports Woman of the Year in 2001.
Norma and her family spent summers at their cabin in Ely on the Echo Trail and beautiful Burntside Lake: swimming, canoeing, picking blueberries and just enjoying!
She was preceded in death by husband Bud, son Buddy, granddaughter Nikki, her parents and her brothers John and Bill. Norma is survived by daughter and son-in-law Linda and Peter LaNasa, Stillwater, MN; son and daughter-in-law Tadd and Emily Johnson, Duluth; daughter-in-law Sherry Johnson, Bend, Oregon; brother and sister-in-law Jim and Dail Anderson, Hermantown, MN; sister-in-laws Eleanor Anderson (John) and Caroline Anderson (Bill); nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and her Lakeside Bridge Club members, who played together for over 50 years!
Visitation: 10 am Friday, May 22, 2015 until the 11 am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 4901 E. Superior St. Reverend Father Seamus Walsh will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred for WDSE-WRPT TV, 632 Niagara Ct., Duluth, MN 55811-3098 for Native American programming. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth, 727-3555.
